Did you
know ...
- ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral
Sclerosis) also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a rapidly progressive
and fatal neuromuscular disease. It attacks the nerve cells that
control the voluntary muscles throughout the body.
- ALS results in complete
paralysis and death.
- 90% die within three
to five years of diagnosis. However, people with ALS usually remain
mentally sharp and in full posession of their senses.
- As the disease progresses,
the person becomes completely dependent - and increasingly unable
to communicate their needs.
- Between 1500 and 2000
Canadians suffer from ALS.
- 2 to 3 Canadians die
of ALS every day.
- ALS can strike anyone.
It can hit any time, regardless of age, sex, or ethnic origin.
- A person with ALS will
require an average of $137,000 in equipment. Nursing care can exceed
ten times that amount.
- There is no treatment
that prolongs life significantly.
- There is no known treatment
or cure, although positive steps are being made in research.
